If the rain has felt relentless lately, the headlines are not exactly helping.
Heavy rain has been hitting different parts of the world in very different ways. In Peru, El Niño-related rainfall recently triggered flooding and landslides that disrupted access to Machu Picchu. In southern China, homes and shops have been submerged and tens of thousands of people have been relocated after repeated rounds of extreme rain. Parts of Taiwan have also seen extraordinary totals, with some areas receiving close to a meter of rain during recent storms. [3][4]
Not every flood happening right now can be blamed on El Niño, of course. Tropical cyclones, regional ocean temperatures, monsoon circulation, local geography and long-term warming all matter. But the broader climate backdrop is unusual. The World Meteorological Organization says a strong El Niño is intensifying and is expected to reshape rainfall patterns across many regions through the second half of 2026. [2]
And then there is the “150-year” headline.
You may have seen claims that we are dealing with something on a scale not seen for roughly 150 years. To be precise, that figure refers to the developing El Niño itself, not to one single global rainfall record. In July, Nature reported that some forecasts had the 2026 El Niño on track to become the largest in at least 150 years if those projections hold. [1]
That distinction matters. But it also sent me down a completely different rabbit hole.
Because while I was looking at the weather, I kept coming back to one astrological fact: we are now in a Neptune-in-Aries period.
Neptune first dipped into Aries in 2025, returned to Pisces during its retrograde, and entered Aries again in January 2026. It will spend much of the coming years moving through the sign. So I started wondering: what happened the last few times Neptune was in Aries?
I expected to find wars, ideological shifts, new movements, maybe technological or spiritual upheaval. Those are easy themes to associate with Aries and Neptune.
I did not expect to keep finding water.
Neptune in Aries: water that crosses a threshold
Neptune is one of the easiest planets to connect symbolically with water. It is associated with oceans, dissolution, permeability, fog, things that spread beyond their usual limits, and experiences in which boundaries become difficult to maintain.
Aries changes the tone.
Aries is not a slow sign. It starts, pushes, breaks through and acts before conditions have necessarily settled. Its symbolism is hot, fast and direct. Put that together with Neptune and the image is not simply “water.” It becomes water that arrives suddenly, water that overruns a boundary, water that behaves with more force than expected, or conditions that escalate faster than the systems built to contain them.
That interpretation sounded neat enough in theory. The historical record is what made it interesting.
1374: The Largest Lower Rhine Flood in an 8,000-Year Record
The most striking example I found is 1374.
The great Rhine flood of that year is already famous among palaeoflood researchers. Modern hydraulic studies describe it as the largest flood in the Lower Rhine catchment of the last millennium. More recent work goes further: when sedimentary, historical and hydraulic evidence is combined, the 1374 event appears to be the largest flood in an approximately 8,000-year Lower Rhine record. Its estimated peak flow was substantially larger than the largest flood in the modern gauged record. [5][6]
The flood was produced by a combination of rainfall and snowmelt. In other words, we are not looking at a vague medieval story about “a lot of rain.” We are looking at a hydrological event that still stands out after thousands of years of reconstructed river history.
And Neptune was in Aries.
Using the Swiss Ephemeris and the historical Julian calendar for the period, around late January 1374 Neptune was near 6° Aries. Saturn was around 8° Aquarius and Pluto around 9° Taurus.

That Saturn-Pluto square will matter later.
1545: A Catastrophic Flood Across the Guadiana Basin
Move forward roughly one Neptune cycle and another extreme case appears.
In January 1545, the Guadiana basin on the Iberian Peninsula experienced one of the largest catastrophic floods recovered from documentary evidence since 1500. At Badajoz, the reconstructed water height reached about 14.78 meters, with an estimated discharge of roughly 25,100 cubic meters per second. Only the 1603 event in the same reconstruction reaches a nearly identical level. [7]
The event was not simply a minor local overflow. Historical studies describe destructive flooding in multiple parts of the basin, and records from the wider Iberian Peninsula point to a broader period of severe hydrological disruption.
Neptune was again in Aries, this time around 22°.
The sky also carried two patterns worth noting: Jupiter was within a few degrees of a trine to Neptune, while Neptune was within a few degrees of a sextile to Pluto.
In symbolic language, that is interesting. Jupiter expands whatever it touches; Neptune spreads, dissolves and saturates. Pluto intensifies and pushes systems toward extremes. None of that proves meteorology, but the repetition starts becoming difficult to ignore as a symbolic pattern.
1708: Continuous Torrential Rain Across Atlantic-Facing Spain
Then comes 1708.
Spanish climate-risk literature identifies January and February 1708 as one of the historical periods in which continuous torrential rain produced catastrophic flooding across major Atlantic basins including the Guadalquivir, Guadiana, Tagus and Duero. These events are specifically discussed as examples of extreme hydrological episodes larger than some of those captured during the modern instrumental era. [8]

There is another layer here: historical ENSO reconstructions have identified 1707–08 as a strong El Niño episode, although pre-instrumental ENSO classifications naturally carry more uncertainty than modern observations. [9]
Astrologically, Neptune was once again in Aries. Around March 1708, Neptune and Pluto were separated by less than a degree from an exact trine.

Continuous torrential rain and catastrophic flooding across several Iberian basins
This is one of the closest historical echoes to the question we are asking in 2026: Neptune in Aries, an El Niño background, and large-scale rainfall disruption.
1867: Australia’s Hawkesbury-Nepean Record Flood
The next major example takes us into the nineteenth century, where the data become much easier to verify.
In June 1867, the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley in New South Wales experienced the largest flood in its recorded history. At Windsor, the river reached about 19.7 meters above mean sea level. New South Wales flood-risk documents describe it as roughly equivalent to a 1-in-500-year event. [10]
Again: Neptune was in Aries.
And this time the planetary structure is especially useful for comparison. Saturn was opposite Pluto within a few degrees, while Jupiter and Uranus were in an extremely tight trine.
There is also evidence from coral-based ENSO reconstruction that 1866–67 was a strong ENSO warm phase. [11]
That does not mean El Niño “caused” the Australian flood in a simple way. Australia’s rainfall relationship with ENSO is regionally complicated, and El Niño often brings dryness to large parts of eastern Australia. But from the narrower historical-comparison perspective, the combination is notable: Neptune in Aries, a reconstructed strong warm ENSO phase, and a flood that still defines the upper end of the region’s recorded history.
1872: Britain’s Wettest Year on Record
Five years later, Neptune was still in Aries.
And 1872 became the wettest year in the United Kingdom’s reconstructed national rainfall series, which now extends back to 1836. The UK average reached 1,438 mm. Despite the many extremely wet years that have followed, 1872 still holds first place. [12]
Manchester experienced severe flooding during the same year, including the River Medlock breaking its banks after torrential rain. Research into British rainfall during the 1870s confirms just how unusual 1872 was across the country. [13]
The planetary pattern was different from 1374 and 1867, but it still contained a familiar trio: Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune. Around early June, Jupiter and Uranus were essentially conjunct in Cancer while both formed a square to Neptune in Aries.
So by this point we have five major examples:

These events are spread across countries, climates and centuries. Their meteorological causes are not identical. That is exactly why I find the repetition more interesting than a single cherry-picked flood.
The recurring theme is not one specific weather mechanism. It is scale.
Again and again, Neptune-in-Aries periods seem to contain water events that push beyond an established boundary: the largest in a record, one of the most catastrophic in centuries, an annual rainfall total that remains unbeaten, or a flood reconstructed at a magnitude modern systems rarely experience.
When We Think of Floods, Noah’s Ark Naturally Comes to Mind
At this point, the obvious thought occurred to me.
If Neptune in Aries has repeatedly coincided with historically extreme floods, what about the most famous flood story of all?
Noah’s Ark is told in Genesis. There is no scientifically established historical date for a global Noahic flood, but biblical chronologies have produced specific proposed dates. The best-known is Archbishop James Ussher’s seventeenth-century chronology, which placed the Flood in 2348 BCE. Other religious chronological systems have produced different dates, including dates around 2472 BCE. Ussher’s date is a theological chronology, not an archaeological dating method. [14]
So I ran Neptune backward.
And this is where the theory failed — which, honestly, makes the rest of the pattern more interesting.
At approximately 2348 BCE, Neptune was not in Aries. In the tropical zodiac it was in Cancer. Around 2472 BCE, it was in Libra. These positions can be reconstructed mathematically even though Neptune itself was not discovered until 1846; modern ephemerides can calculate planetary positions far into the past. [15]
So no: the traditional Noah chronology does not give us another Neptune-in-Aries flood.
There is a beautiful symbolic irony in the 2348 BCE result, though. Neptune in Cancer would fit a story centered on water, family, shelter, survival, home and the preservation of life inside a protective vessel almost too neatly. But that is a different article.
For this one, Noah’s Ark is useful because it stops us from forcing the pattern. If every famous flood landed under Neptune in Aries, I would distrust the analysis. It does not.
The pattern is narrower: some of the most extraordinary historically documented rainfall and flood episodes of the last several centuries happened during Neptune-in-Aries passages.
So When Should We Be Paying the Closest Attention?
This is where the research went from interesting to slightly unsettling.
I had already been watching 2028 astrologically for other reasons. Once I compared it with these historical flood years, one year stood out immediately: 1374.
Remember the 1374 Lower Rhine flood — the event that may be the largest in the region’s 8,000-year reconstructed record?
Around the flood period, the slow-planet structure looked roughly like this:
Neptune ~6° Aries
Saturn ~8° Aquarius
Pluto ~9° Taurus
Saturn square Pluto
Now look at June 2028:
Neptune ~9° Aries
Saturn ~8° Taurus
Pluto ~8° Aquarius
Saturn square Pluto
The first thing that jumps out is obvious: Neptune is back in Aries, at almost the same part of the sign.
But the stranger part is Saturn and Pluto.
In 1374, Saturn was in Aquarius and Pluto was in Taurus.
In 2028, Saturn is in Taurus and Pluto is in Aquarius.
They have effectively switched signs — while recreating the same square.
It is almost a mirror image.
On June 24, 2028, the Saturn-Pluto square becomes extremely tight. And just two weeks earlier, Neptune and Pluto form an almost exact sextile while Uranus in Gemini also connects into the wider outer-planet geometry.
If 1374 were the only historical flood year showing a Saturn-Pluto hard aspect, I would treat that as a curiosity. But 1867 also featured Saturn in a hard opposition to Pluto during the Hawkesbury-Nepean record flood.
That gives us a recurring combination:
Neptune in Aries + a hard Saturn-Pluto aspect + an extreme flood event.
And 2028 brings that combination back.
The 1374 comparison is the headline, but it is not the only one.
In 1545, the Guadiana flood occurred with a strong Jupiter-Neptune relationship and a Neptune-Pluto relationship.
In 1708, Neptune and Pluto were almost exactly trine.
In 1867, Jupiter and Uranus were tightly connected while Saturn and Pluto formed a hard aspect.
In 1872, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune were tied together in a compact configuration during Britain’s record-wet year.
Now look at the sequence of 2028:
January 13: Uranus trine Pluto becomes exact.
May 10: Uranus trine Pluto becomes exact again.
June 9: Neptune sextile Pluto becomes almost exact.
June 24: Saturn square Pluto becomes almost exact.
September 24: Jupiter trine Pluto.
September 29: Jupiter opposite Neptune.
October 27: Jupiter trine Uranus.
November 8: Neptune sextile Pluto becomes almost exact again.
November 15–16: Saturn square Pluto returns to exactness.
That is a lot of outer-planet structure packed into one year.
More importantly for this particular study, it is not random structure. Several of those pairings are the same pairings that appear in the historical flood cases.
Neptune-Pluto: 1545 and 1708.
Saturn-Pluto hard aspect: 1374 and 1867.
Jupiter-Uranus: 1867 and 1872.
Jupiter-Neptune: 1545 and 1872.
2028 collects all of them.
If I had to divide the year, I would watch two periods.
June carries the strongest echo of 1374. Neptune is in early Aries, Pluto is in early Aquarius, Saturn is in early Taurus, and the Saturn-Pluto square becomes exact. Neptune and Pluto are also almost exactly sextile earlier in the month.
Symbolically, Saturn is infrastructure, containment, limits and systems designed to hold pressure. Pluto is extreme force, buried pressure and structural transformation. A square between them can describe systems meeting loads they cannot comfortably absorb.
When Neptune is part of the same background, the image is not hard to see: water, saturation or loss of boundaries meeting infrastructure and physical limits under stress.
This period is different. Jupiter moves into opposition with Neptune at the end of September, then trines Uranus in late October. Neptune-Pluto becomes exact again in early November, followed by another Saturn-Pluto square in mid-November.
Jupiter opposite Neptune is the aspect that catches my eye most in relation to scale. Jupiter magnifies. Neptune diffuses. An opposition can pull something across a wider field rather than keeping it contained in one place.
Then Uranus adds suddenness.
If we are looking specifically for an astrological signature that resembles “too much, too quickly, over too wide an area,” late 2028 provides a remarkably clean symbolic picture.
This is ultimately the question I came away with.
I would not single out 2028 just because Neptune is in Aries. Neptune stays in a sign for years; that would be far too broad.
I single it out because the year reconstructs several of the secondary patterns that appeared during earlier extreme flood episodes — and it does so at the same time.
The 1374 mirror is the strongest part: Neptune at a similar degree of Aries, Saturn and Pluto recreating their square, with Saturn and Pluto essentially exchanging the signs they occupied during an event that still sits at the top of an 8,000-year Lower Rhine flood record.
Then 2028 layers in Neptune-Pluto, Jupiter-Neptune and Jupiter-Uranus contacts that echo 1545, 1708, 1867 and 1872.
That does not tell us where rain would fall. Astrology cannot tell us which river basin will receive a particular atmospheric river or where a tropical cyclone will stall. We also cannot responsibly forecast the state of ENSO in 2028 this far in advance.
But if the historical symbolic recurrence means anything, 2028 is the year in the current Neptune-in-Aries passage that I would circle most heavily.
Not necessarily because the entire planet will be under water. More likely, if the pattern expresses itself through weather, one or more regions could experience a water disaster toward the upper end of their historical experience — the kind of event later described with language like “largest since records began,” “worst in centuries,” or “beyond the design assumptions.”
That is exactly the language that keeps appearing in the earlier cases.
After going through these events, I do not think “Neptune in Aries means rain” is the most useful conclusion.
Rain happens every year. Floods happen every year. If that were the argument, it would be meaningless.
The more specific pattern is this: Neptune in Aries repeatedly appears alongside water events that exceed a known boundary.
The Rhine flood that sits above roughly 8,000 years of reconstructed events.
A Guadiana flood near the top of a five-century catastrophic-flood record.
Continuous torrential rain across several major Iberian basins.
The largest recorded Hawkesbury-Nepean flood.
The wettest year in Britain’s national rainfall series.
Aries is the part of the symbolism that makes that distinction interesting. It does not simply describe water; it describes crossing the line first.
And that is why I am watching 2028.
We already know the current Neptune-in-Aries era is beginning under an unusually powerful El Niño background. The weather pattern developing in 2026 may become one of the strongest El Niño events researchers have reconstructed over at least the last 150 years. We are also living with warmer oceans and an atmosphere capable of holding more moisture than it did during the historical Neptune-in-Aries cycles discussed above. [1][2]
The old patterns do not need to repeat literally to matter.
Sometimes history rhymes by changing the scale.
And if that is what is happening here, 2028 may be the year when we find out just how far the water can cross the old line.
